Exporting Waypoints To A Meridian Meridian GPS Receiver

If you own a Magellan Meridian GPS receiver, this option will come in handy when you need to ‘upload’ waypoints to the unit using the SD card. GPXSonar will use whatever caches are present in the list and will generate a waypoint file that the GPS can understand.

The waypoints are written to a file named ‘MagWpts’

located under ‘\Program Files\GPXsonar\Export’ (default location). GPXSonar will confirm the operation by showing you a message box with the total of exported waypoints .

All you need to do is to copy this file to the SD card of your GPS unit using the SD card slot of your PDA. Then, using the ‘Card Utilities’ menu on the Meridian, choose the ‘Load Waypoints/Routes File’ option to load the waypoints into the User Database.

In the User Database, you will notice that each cache waypoint is prefixed with 2 numbers separated by a ‘/’ like this: 15/25 GCxxxx. The first number represents the difficulty rating of the cache and the second one represents the terrain rating of the cache.

Exporting Waypoints In EasyGPS .loc Format

Many people use their PDA as a GPS receiver and navigate to cache locations using  programs such as ‘Mapopolis’ and ‘GPS Tuner’. Some of these applications such as GPS Tuner are capable of importing waypoints in GPX format as generated by EasyGPS or by Geocaching.com. GPXSonar will also export any cache visible in the main list to a .loc file compatible with these other applications (i.e GPS Tuner). The waypoints are written to a file named ‘LocWpts.loc’ located under ‘\Program Files\GPXsonar\Export’ (default location).

ROT13 Helper

Should you need to encrypt or decrypt any information in the field, this built-in tool will let you do just that easily. Simply hit the ‘Convert’ button to decrypt and encrypt any text that you enter.

Note: by default, the ROT13 Helper will show the hint of the cache currently selected in the list.

Performance

Through this dialog, you can control how GPXSonar consumes memory on your device. You have 2 options:

  • Use More Memory (Faster): This is the default option. When in use,  the application loads the entire content of the GPX file into memory and generates the cache pages without any further file access.
  • Use Less Memory (Slower): Use this option when you need to spare memory. For instance, if you need to run other large applications along with GPXSonar. In this mode, the application places the cache descriptions and the cache logs into an alternate file created when the GPX file is loaded. When a cache page needs to be generated, the application retrieves the information from the alternate text store. Because of this, loading the GPX file and generating HTML pages may be slightly slower than with the former option. In average, this setting reduces the memory usage by 60% to 70%. Your mileage will vary according to the size of the Pocket Query file.
